Anastassiou, Christos

He was born, lives, and works in Athens. He pursued advanced studies in Music Theory (under Al. Laskaridis, Ath. Papanikolaou, and K. Kydoniatis - Hellenic Conservatory), obtaining diplomas in Harmony, Counterpoint, Instrumentation & Band Conducting, as well as Fugue and Orchestration, all with highest distinction. He also studied double bass, electric bass, and piano, and attended courses in Kinesiology and Orchestral Conducting with Lefteris Chalkiadakis.

He continued his studies in Composition and Orchestral Conducting under Theodore Antoniou at the National Conservatory of Athens, where he received Diplomas in Composition (with highest distinction) and Orchestral Conducting. He then completed postgraduate studies (Master of Arts) in Composition, Analysis, Orchestral Conducting, and Electroacoustic Music at the University of Belgrade, under Professors Srdjan Hofman and Zoran Erić.

He has participated in numerous seminars and workshops across Europe (Basel, Zurich, Athens, and elsewhere), focusing on electroacoustic music, sound programming, algorithmic and spectral composition, acousmatic music, and advanced tools in music technology and analysis. In 1992–93, he attended the Music Informatics seminar series organized by the Contemporary Music Research Center (KSYME) in collaboration with Columbia University (topic: “Music through Programming”).

He has conducted and orchestrated numerous works for vocal and instrumental ensembles, presented in concerts in Greece and abroad, and recorded in major studios. His work has received distinctions in international competitions such as ALEA III, OLYMPIA (ERT), Belgrade Festival, Taukay (Italy), and OUAEMF (Japan).

A prolific composer, his oeuvre encompasses a wide spectrum of contemporary and electroacoustic music, comprising to date 146 works, including string quartets, concertos, orchestral and chamber music, pieces for solo instruments and voice, choral music, theatre music, electroacoustic/electronic compositions, as well as mixed-media and multimedia works.

His multidimensional sonic organization, continuous exploration and implementation of new methods and timbres, and investigation into the physical properties and production of sound, lead him to re-evaluate and redefine his musical language and aesthetic approach in each new work. His in-depth musical exploration and knowledge of various programming environments and tools allow him to broaden his horizons and deepen his understanding of the sonic world.
Music informatics, sound design, modern scientific and technological approaches, philosophy, quantum physics, mathematics, fractals, chaos theory, acoustics, psychoacoustics, environmental sound, and anthropology are all central to his creative process. These disciplines open new horizons and inspire him to shape his own musical universe. Their integration serves not merely innovation but a deeper spiritual and existential inquiry underlying his work. Meaning, semantics, and aesthetics emerging from musical structure form the foundation for expressing the richness of imagination and existential reflection that permeate his music.

His works have been performed by distinguished soloists, ensembles, and orchestras in Greece, Europe, and the United States. Many have been commissioned by music organizations, festivals, and foundations. He is also active in the field of jazz, with arrangements and compositions presented in concert programs and recordings.

In 2016, he began his collaboration with the international record label Phasma Music. In cooperation with Sarton Records Warsaw Poland, two CDs featuring contemporary music, Aleph and Beth, were released, including his works Stochasmos and Makron for solo flute.

In 2017, two more CDs of contemporary music, Two Minutes and Daleth, were recorded in Poland, featuring his works Satsang (2017) for flute and alto flute and Echomorphes (2017) for flute and vibraphone. These were released in early 2018 by Phasma Music (Naxos).

In 2022, the CD Tuba Varie was released, featuring his work Anavasis (2022) for solo tuba.
Several additional works have also been recorded and are scheduled for release by Phasma Music, including String Quartet No. 2 (2009), Breath and Sound for solo flute (2018), Antinomies for flute and piano (2019), Inner Spirit for flute, violin, viola, and cello (2019), Monologue for solo clarinet (1994), and Elampsi for solo violin (2022). Further recordings and concerts are being planned, along with the production of a personal CD.

He has served as Artistic Director and Professor of Music Theory and Composition at several conservatories in Athens. He has also taught and lectured in composition seminars, both in contemporary Greek and international music.

He has participated as a jury member in committees evaluating contemporary and electroacoustic music works in Greece and abroad.

From 2010 to 2018, he was a member of the Events Committee of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, responsible for evaluating applications for the use of archaeological sites and monuments (e.g., Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, among others).

He collaborates with the international record label Phasma Music, with releases of his works in cooperation with Naxos and Sarton Records Warsaw. New recordings and CDs are currently in production, including a personal album.

Since 1994, he has been a regular member of the Union of Greek Composers, serving as Curator on its Board of Directors from 2018 to 2024.

He is also a member of the Hellenic Association of Electroacoustic Music Composers (ESSIM).

His works are published by Donemus Publishing, The Hague, Netherlands.

Since September 2022, he has been represented worldwide by MUSICENTRY.
