Lowell Dykstra composes, mostly on commission, chamber music, choral music and works for orchestra. His music has been performed by the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra, the North Netherlands Orchestra, the North Holland Philharmonic Orchestra, Youth Orchestra Netherlands and various choirs such as the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Netherlands Student Chamber Choir and Studium Chorale and musicians such as Trio Ibert, Syrinx Saxophone Quartet, Maarten Koningsberger and Kelvin Grout and the violin-piano duo Tjeerd Top and Mariken Zandvliet.
1952 - 1990
Lowell Dykstra was born on September 14 in Exeter, Huron County (Ontario), Canada. At the age of seven, he emigrated with his family to the Netherlands. He studied guitar with Guido Topper at the Music Pedagogy Academy in Leeuwarden and composition with Willem Frederik Bon at the Conservatory in Groningen. After Bon's untimely death, he continued his studies at the Utrecht Conservatory with Tristan Keuris, where he graduated in 1990.

2001
Lowell Dykstra is betrokken bij het Gala van het Oor, georganiseerd door de Nationale Hoor Stichting.
2006 - 2007
Na een aantal jaren full-time componist te zijn geweest combineert Lowell Dykstra nu zijn componeren met lesgeven. In de zomer van 2007 begint hij met het geven van een 7-daagse cursus/workshop gericht op het schrijven voor strijkkwartet. De werken van de cursisten zullen worden uitgevoerd door Le Quatuor de Mirmande. Deze cursus wordt gegeven in Mirmande, Frankrijk.
2008 - 2012
Inmiddels is de cursus in Frankrijk beëindigd en maakt hij als docent deel uit van de jaarlijkse docenten cursus van altvioliste Gisella Bergman. Hier geeft hij lessen in hoofdzakelijk arrangeren en de Finale notatie software.
In 2012 was Lowell Dykstra gastdocent compositie aan het Fontys Conservatorium.
In deze periode schrijft hij een aantal instrumentale kamermuziekwerken, koorwerken en een grootschalige compositie voor koor, brass band en slagwerk, over de Friese atlete Foekje Dillema met de nadruk op haar vermeende man-zijn, waardoor zij na een (wat wordt gezegd, een dubieuze) geslachtstest, in 1950 gediskwalificeerd werd als titelhoudster op de 500-meter.
