Gascogne, Mathieu

Mathieu Gascogne (?-?) flourished in the early years of the 16th century too. He was a French composer of the Renaissance. His contemporaries, like Adrian Willaert, estimated him as equal to Josquin, Ockeghem and Mouton. Some sources mention him in records on the French court, others in cathedrals as Meaux, Tours and Cambrai. Maybe even all are correct. Most of his sacred works are ‘parodies’ on chansons by Pierre de le Rue, Jean Mouton and Josquin DesPrez. His music is exemplary for the French music of his time: refined polyphony and pervasive imitations. One hears some resemblance to Josquin.
