Hassler, Caspar

Caspar Hassler (1562-1618) was a German organist and composer. He was member of a family of musicians: his father Isaak was an organist as well, and his brothers were Jacob and Hans Leo Hassler. Unlike his brothers, Caspar (or Kasper) remained in Nuremberg during all his life. He became organist in several churches. He also worked in the silver and copper mining trade, together with his brother Hans Leo during the early 17th century.
As a composer he is not so very well known, but he is of some importance for his publishing work, producing valuable collections of music by Italian and German composers (including his brother’s), thus helping to introduce and spread the Italian prima prattica to Germany. He was also known for his advice in organ building and restoring.
