Website: Website Sipke Hoekstra

Sipke Hoekstra (1976) was born in The Netherlands, in the province of Fryslân. At age eight, he took up violin playing, at nine he started composing and at eleven he was admitted to a pre-preparatory training of the Groningen Conservatory. There he received his first lessons in theory and solfeggio. He had some composition 'sessions' with Rein Ferwerda and Wim Diriwagter as well. As a teenager, he became experienced as concertmaster and conductor with the Frysk Jeugdorkest, which played some of his works, as well as a variety of other amateur ensembles.

After graduating high school, Hoekstra studied Classical Violin and General History (Groningen University) for a while, but would eventually find himself receiving a doctoral degree in Musicology (2006) at Utrecht University. In the meanwhile, being still autodidact, he already had produced a significant amount of music, including a symphony, two string quartets, a mass and songs. Between 2007 and 2008 he took private lessons in 16th and 17th century counterpoint with the late Dr. Gert Oost. In 2010 he was admitted to the Utrecht Conservatory of Music, where he studied Composition with the Dutch composer Caroline Ansink. In 2015 he initiated practical coaching sessions with the Dutch-Argentine composer Carlos Micháns.

The premiere of Sipke Hoekstra’s symphonic poem Saga during the National Youth Symphony Orchestra Competition of the Netherlands 2015 in the Akoesticum in Ede, received a special Akoesticum Prize. 'Saga' was played again during the finals on June 13th 2015, in which the FJO won the 1st prize, in the prestigious concert hall De Doelen in Rotterdam. 'Saga' would reach the third round of the Prestigious Tristan Keuris Competition in 2016. In may 2015, Sipke Hoekstra also received a Third Prize in the Malta International Composition Competition, for his Third String Quartet, 'First Movement.' In 2015 Hoekstra was admitted to Nieuw Geneco, the association for Dutch professional composers.
Among his most recent commissioned works are the 'Prometheus Passion', a passion for soloists, choir and ensemble and 'Spectrum a 4', a quartet for flute, oboe, marimba and piano.

Sipke Hoekstra is married and has three sons. As a cultural entrepreneur he is involved in the organization, branding and marketing of festivals, orchestra’s and artists in the Netherlands and abroad.
