Vanessa Lann was born on April 6, 1968 in New York.

Education: Vanessa Lann has been a composer and pianist since the age of five. She studied composition with Ruth Schonthal at the Westchester Conservatory of Music, where she received the William Petchek Scholarship. For two summers she was a scholarship student at the Tanglewood Institute. She was graduated summa cum laude from the music department of Harvard University (composition, theory, musicology, piano performance, conducting), where her teachers included Earl Kim, Leon Kirchner and Peter Lieberson.
In addition to her music courses, Lann studied film theory and physics. In 1990, Vanessa Lann was awarded the Harvard University John Knowles Paine Travelling Fellowship, which brought her to The Netherlands for further study in music composition. She received her Diploma with highest honors in 1993 from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where her teachers included Theo Loevendie, Gilius van Bergeijk and Louis Andriessen.

Career: While studying, she directed the Harvard Group For New Music and was co-founder of the Harvard Group For Gender Studies In Music. She also produced and announced radio feature programs (WHRB, Cambridge) and worked as music director for productions at the American Repertory Theater.
At present, Lann lives and works as a composer and pianist in The Netherlands. She is also a Professor of Music at Webster University in Leiden, where she enjoys combining musicological studies with other related fields. Vanessa Lann also works as a visiting lecturer at individual events and cultural series on topics involving music, art, history and society. Besides, Lann is frequently invited to give pre-concert introductions and interviews at a wide range of performance spaces. Furtermore, she advises schools and other educational institutions on their policies and programs to optimize engagement and stimulate inspirational trajectories in teaching and learning environments for students of all ages.

Compositions: Some recent works include: ‘Gardener of the Stream’ (2003) and ‘The Flames of Quietude’ (2006) for symphony orchestra; ‘Divining Apollo’ for cello and ensemble (2008); 'O Whispering Suns’ for violin, cymbalom and double choir (2001); 'Lullabye for a Young Girl Dreaming’ (1991) and 'Landscape of a Soul's Remembering' (2006) for string quartet; and ‘Double | Reed’ for bassoon and chamber orchestra (2014). This piece is the third of five recently-commissioned concertos for unusual instruments in the Doelen Concert Hall's "Rotterdam Concerto" series. Lann's 2015 orchestral arrangement of her own work, 'Dancing to an Orange Drummer' (original version for large ensemble, 1993), was performed on request by the Boston Pops Orchestra and will receive more than 15 European performances in the 2016/2017 season.

Awards: Lann won the New York Music Teachers Association 'Herbert Zipper Prize,' the New York Musicians Club 'Bohemians Prize' and the Harvard University 'Hugh F. MacColl Prize.’
Throughout her career Vanessa Lann has continued to receive prizes and awards for her music. In 1993, Lann's work for orchestra ‘Madness and the Moonwoman’ was awarded the Nederlands Balletorkest Prize of a performance in the 25-year jubilleum concert of the Nederlands Balletorkest under the direction of David Porcelijn. Her work for piano solo ‘Inner Piece’ won a prestigious Amsterdam Arts Foundation Composition Prize in 1995. This work also won the 1997 Boswil International Composition Competition (Switzerland) and the 1998 Collegium Novum Competition (USA).
In 1997, Vanessa Lann was featured in a Dutch television documentary which focused on her music and on the compact disc recording of her work for large ensemble ‘Dancing to an Orange Drummer’. In 2015 the ATTACCA label released a compilation CD entitled 'moonshadow sunshadow,' featuring seven works from the past 25 years (ATT 2015146, available atwww.attaccaproductions.com).

1968 - 1985

Vanessa Lann (6 april 1968, Brooklyn, New York) begint al jong met pianospelen en noemt zich vanaf haar vijfde jaar al pianiste en componiste. Ze studeert compositie en muziektheorie bij Ruth Schonthal aan het Westchester Conservatory of Music.

1986 - 1990

Vanessa Lann vervolgt haar studie aan de Harvard University bij Earl Kim, Leon Kirchner en Peter Lieberson. Naast de muziek studeert ze ook filmtheorie en fysica. Al tijdens haar studie houdt ze zich bezig met de organisatie van concerten met nieuwe muziek en het maken van radioprogramma's en is ze als muziekregisseur actief voor het American Repertory Theatre. Ze studeert summa cum laude af en ontvangt in 1990 de John Knowles Paine Travelling Fellowship die haar in staat stelt in het buitenland verder te studeren.

1990 - 1993

Vanessa Lann vertrekt naar Nederland om aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag compositie te studeren bij Theo Loevendie. Daarnaast studeert ze elektronische muziek bij Gilius van Bergeijk en volgt ze enkele lessen bij Louis Andriessen. Ze gaat direct zelf lesgeven in compositie, muziektheorie en twintigste eeuwse muziekanalyse aan The British School in Voorschoten. In 1991 krijgt ze de uitnodiging een werk te schrijven voor het International Festival of Woman in Music dat dit jaar in Nederland plaatsvindt. Ook in 1992 in Spanje en in 1993 in de Verenigde Staten is ze van de partij. In 1993 is haar compositie Madness and the Moonwoman (1992) een van de werken die het Nederlands Balletorkest uitvoert tijdens het Project Jonge Componisten.

1995 - 1997

Vanessa Lann krijgt de Aanmoedigingsprijs van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst voor haar pianocompositie 'Inner Piece' (1994), geschreven voor Tomoko Mukaiyama. Het werk behaalt de tweede prijs bij het Internationale Componisten Concours Boswil 1997 in Zwitserland. Lann is onderwerp van een documentaire voor de Nederlandse tv. Haar muziek en in het bijzonder de cd-opname van 'Dancing to an Orange Drummer' (1993) door Ensemble Present onder leiding van Jurjen Hempel staan centraal.

1998 - 1999

Vanessa Lann wint met 'Inner Piece' (1994) de Collegium Novum Competition in Illinois in de Verenigde Staten. Ze ontvangt een uitnodiging om een werk te schrijven voor de Jakarta Art Summit in Indonesië. Het werk van Vanessa Lann staat centraal tijdens een concert dat de invloed van de Nederlandse muziek op haar wijze van componeren tot onderwerp heeft.

2000 - 2001

Vanessa Lann schrijft met 'Resurrecting Persephone' (1999), voor fluit en kamerorkest, de 'millenniumopdracht' voor de AVRO-Radio. Ze schrijft een van de opdrachtwerken voor de prestigieuze Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

2002

Vanessa Lann neemt afscheid van The British School en gaat werken als docent muziekgeschiedenis, wiskunde, oosterse filosofie, wereldmuziek en multimedia aan de Webster University in Leiden.

2003

Voor de jaarlijkse tournee van het Nederlands Studenten Orkest heeft Vanessa Lann de opdracht gekregen een orkestwerk te componeren. Op 15 januari gaat 'Gardener of the Stream' in Bergen in première onder leiding van Jurjen Hempel.

2006

Het in opdracht van het Residentie Orkest geschreven orkestwerk 'The Flames of Quietude' gaat in première tijdens het Festival in de Branding. Vanessa Lann speelt hierbij zelf de pianopartij.

2008

Voor cellist Hans Woudenberg en het Schönberg Ensemble componeert Vanessa Lann het celloconcert 'Divining Apollo' waarin ze 'goddelijke proporties', de werking van het geheugen en mathematische structuren onderzoekt. Het werk gaat onder leiding van Reinbert de Leeuw in première tijdens de internationale Amsterdamse Cello Biënnale.

2011

Vanessa Lann krijgt de opdracht van de internationale Koorbiënnale in Haarlem om een ruimtelijk werk te schrijven. 'O Whispering Suns' voor viool, cymbalom en koor gaat op 2 juli in première met het Groot Omroepkoor en het Lets Radio Koor onder leiding van Kaspars Putnins. De solisten zijn violiste Patricia Kopatchinskaja en haar vader Viktor Kopatchinsky op cimbalom. De strijkorkestversie van haar in 1990 geschreven strijkkwartet 'Lullabye for a Young Girl Dreaming' gaat in New York in première.
