Mateo Soto was born on 1972 in Cartagena (Spain), where he starts his studies of viola and piano. He studied composition at the Conservatory "Manuel Massotti Littel" of Murcia with Manuel Seco de Arpe. He also expresses his gratitude to Salvador Brotons, Tomás Marco and Antón García Abril for their advice.
He has received some composition awards such as "Premio SGAE 1993" (Spanish Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers), "Frederic Mompou International Award 1996" for Young Composers Competition of Joventuts Musicals of Barcelona and "Tribuna de Jóvenes Compositores 1997" (Juan March Foundation, Madrid).
His music has been performed by players, ensembles and orchestras such as Leonel Morales, Albert Nieto, Sussanne Kessel, Martin Tchiba, Gabriel Escudero Braquehais, Anné-Marie Condacse, Kristin Leitterman, Paolo Carlini, Frano Kakarigi, Manuel Miján, Jesús Villa Rojo, José María Santandreu, Trío Mompou, Trio Bacarisse, Quartetto Bernini, Quatuor Tana, Spanish Brass Luur Metalls, Concertus Novo, Grupo LIM, Columbus Ohio Discovery Ensemble, London Chamber Group, Orquesta de Cámara de Cartagena, Orquesta de Jóvenes de la Región de Murcia, Orquesta de la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes (México), Orquesta de Montecatini Terme (Italia), Moscow Symphony Orchestra, etc.

He teaches Fundamentals of Musical Composition at the Conservatory of Cartagena and is the Head of Composition Department.
