Michele Varotto was an Italian composer of the late Renaissance period. He was (probably) born and raised in Novara. There is some dispute on this; but the title page of the part books being the source material for this transcription call the author Michele Varoto Novarensis. About his year of birth there is an even greater dispute: some sources give 1525, others 1550, and many sources say 1540. His first appearance in expense books of the chapter of the cathedral in Novara is in April 1546, when he was paid as a cantor. His first composition was a ‘Missa Nova’ in 1549. Beside his work as a canon and maestro di cappella in the Novara Cathedral he worked for the Chapel of the Three Kings (of Archdeacon Melchiorre Langhi). He wrote a number of sacred works, and was buried in the cathedral where he worked his whole life.
