Program note (English): A catenary is the curve described by a cable suspended at both ends and hanging freely under gravity. It is described mathematically by the graph of the hyperbolic cosine function. In this piece the pitches followed by the viola line form a catenary if the piece is plotted on a weird time-scale in which time is accelerated logarithmically. This accelerated time-frame ensures that intervals over which events occur become ever shorter and that the natural symmetry of the catenary structure is heavily skewed. The catenary also occurs widely in the foreground structures in the piece. An extensive outward fanning introduction lays down a harmonic map of the piece joined to the central span by a tenuous viola cadenza. At its height the viola takes off into a second cadenza, a distorted mirror image of the first - which is followed by the opening sequence pared down to its bare essentials. Throughout the piece the wine glasses give a constant pitch axis relative to which the various
catenary movements can be referred - a sort of reference datum if you like. - Richard Sims
