Ils cassent le monde
Toelichting:
Program note (English): The work is based on two French poems by Boris Vian (1920-1959) and taken from the volume 'Je voudrais pas crever'. I translated the poems with some help from Trille Bédarrides. The translation is as close to the original as possible, in other words it is not a 'poetic' translation - the sort which translators use to show what great poets they are themselves... Vian's style is a blend of the serious and the sardonic. Cabaret comes to mind, but so does the self-deprecating act of the clown: tears behind the smiles - the grin behind sadness. The challenge was to match and underline these ambiguities in my music - unexplored territory hitherto. - JAN VRIEND
