In the string quartet Traum, Lenz, Verwandlung, an attempt has been made to return to the intergrity - aesthetically and structurally - of the classical style. THis means that expression and form are essentially the same thing, and that the musical argument is developed within the interior space created by tonality. At the same time, the idiom is not a pastiche: influences from the 19th and 20th centuries are integrated with the musical language, as far as they do not interfere with the basic stylistic unity.
