Program note (English): The work of the German poet Theodor Storm (1817-1888) is characterized by a songlike, unassuming soulfulness, love of his native land on the North Sea coast in Northern Germany, and a melancholic atmosphere. The main themes of his poems are nature, love and marriage. The sensual abandon to the moment is contrasted with the fleeting impermanence of all earthly things. Storm's musical verses have inspired many composers including Brahms and Berg, who set 'Schliesse mir die Augen beide' twice. The five poems of this group describe a movement from the mysticism of nature via the nostalgia of reminiscence to the intimacy of love. - HANS CHRISTIAN DÉTLEFSEN
