String Quartet Nº 1 : opus 6 / Marijn Simons
Toelichting:
After having composed a lot of pieces between 1987 and 1993, a short work for violin and piano called Capriccio (1993) was categorized by me as “opus 1” based on the fact that this was the first composition performed at a concert. However, I want to keep all the works before opus 11 (Capriccio for Stan & Ollie, 1996) for myself. They are not allowed to ever become public through publications, performances, recordings or otherwise.
The only exception being my String Quartet no. 1, opus 6 (1994/1995). In February 2010 I decided to revise and publish this work to make my series of String Quartets complete. As there is a “no. 1” in my Symphonies and Violin Concertos, I felt there also has to be a “no. 1” among my String Quartets.
In revisions of older works I always improve things that I noticed during rehearsals and performances, e.g. some notational things which were misunderstood by the interpreters, orchestrations that didn’t quite work or the timing of a certain passage in the composition that turned out to be unsatisfactory to the way I had it in mind. Therefore only the revised versions of my compositions may be performed, published or recorded and not the so-called “original versions”.
