Toelichting:
This piece is based on Die Pfeiferstube by the German author Paul Alvedes (1897-1973). Three German soldiers of the First World War had been shot through the throat. Death by suffocation was threatening. To prevent this a silver tube was set into the neck as a windpipe. When breathing, speaking or laughing a soft piping note, 'like the speaking of mice', could be heard. Hence they were called the whistlers. An English prisoner of war, who was also severely wounded in the throat, joined them. To their surprise they found out that the English national anthem, 'God save the King', had the same melody as the national anthem of the German Emprire, 'Heil dir im Siegerkranz.' When they were singing together this melody without the words, an unexpected, wonderful sense of fraternity was felt. - JACQUES BANK
