Toelichting:
The collector of this album Melchior Borchgrevinck (c. 1570-1632), was a Dutch-Danish musician. The underlying bundle 'Giardino Novo' - with the full Italian title of Giardino di nuovo bellissimo varii fiori musicali scieltissimi, and of which this album is only the first of two volumes - contains madrigals by mostly other (Italian) composers than himself; only a few madrigals are of his own hand. It would be a tremendous task to discuss all the composers in this album, but a few names are well-known to us: Claudio Monteverdi, Leone Leoni, Giaches de Wert, Salamone Rossi (Ebreo) and Giovanni Croce. Nevertheless the relatively unknown music in this collection is surprisingly fresh and challenging. Most of it is not heard for over 400 years. It deserves better.
