Elegy for string quartet was composed in April 2005 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, a few months after the Indian Ocean tsunami of the 26th of December 2004, which caused such a large loss of life in many countries in that region. It is dedicated to the memory of those who perished at that time.
Over a murmuring ostinato in the viola and cello, the two violins articulate an impassioned declaration of loss, before the piece comes to a gentle close.
