A Christmas Cantata (Now is the Prophet's Time) : for solo tenor, school choir, mixed choir and orchestra / Music: Rudi M. van Dijk; text: Prof. George Johnston
Auteur(s):
Johnston, George
(Tekstdichter/librettist)
Dijk, Rudi Martinus van
(Componist)
Toelichting:
This little Cantata is not a claim to stylistic originality. It is tonal (sometimes polychordal). I felt a need to make an effort with the utilitarian in mind.
The hymn (130th psalm) is European. This short work could be programmed with other short compositions at a Christmas concert.
The other motivation originated when, while visiting “Le Père Lachaisse” in Paris, looking for the grave of Fr. Chopin, I got lost in a maze of little paths and suddenly found myself at Francis Poulenc’s resting-place. This explains a motif throughout this work, which occurs in Poulenc’s Gloria.
Suitable for college and highschool performance because the difficulty is very moderate.
