Toelichting:
The Bavarian State Library (Bayerische Staats Bibliothek in Munich, Germany) holds a unique collection of large folio format choirbooks from the Bavarian court music ensemble, predominantly from the time of Orlando di Lasso serving as court music director. Several splendidly illustrated choir books originally belonged to the personal collection of the Bavarian dukes. The most beautiful one is the collection of motets by Cipriano de Rore for Duke Albrecht V, also available at Donemus (D 16092). Choirbooks have all the parts on two facing pages, in contrast to the separate books for each voice that we see mostly in Renaissance editions.
Manuscript # 88 is a collection of 8 settings of the Magnificat by Johann Stadlmayr on all 8 church modes. Stadlmayr has written settings on the even verses, the odd verses are supposed to be sung in the corresponding mode in plainchant. In all the settings the original melody can be heard as cantus firmus. The title of the book shows the composer as ‘Ioannes Stadlmair, Capellæ Magister Illustrissimi et Reverendissimi Principis Salisburgensis’ ( J.S., Choir master of the Most illustre and reverend Prince of Salzburg).
