Palimpsest : for guitar / Mickael Luis
Toelichting:
The composition was inspired by a Korean children's story called "Waiting for Mommy" by Tae-jun Lee (1938) and illustrated by Dong-sung Kim (2004). The text dates from 1938, a dark period in the history of Korea, which was seeking independence from Japan. The book depicts this period and tells the story of an orphan who is waiting for his mother (who will probably never come) at a tram stop.
Why Palimpsest? The text was retold in 2004 and illustrated by Dong-sung Kim. You can see two different periods in one object. The work in its present state may suggest and show traces of earlier versions. This book is a real palimpsest!
