Toelichting:
The libretto consists of verses from the third book, Paradiso of the Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri, in which the poet describes the heavenly light as he travels through paradise.

PARADISO 1 for mixed vocal quartet or octet, was originally composed in 1992 as a preliminary study for my oratorio Paradiso for Utrechts Vocaal Ensemble with financial support from the Dutch Performing Arts Fund. The first performance took place that same year on February 26 at the Pieterskerk in Utrecht. In 1999 it was revised mainly by adding a coda and sung by members of Erasmus Chamber Choir from Rotterdam. Together with Paradiso 2, for baritone and large ensemble, Paradiso 1 is a preliminary study for the oratorio Paradiso which I eventually composed in 2000.
