Bijzonderheden: Përmet Canon in B is a composition for SATB choir based on two folk music motifs from Përmet, my hometown in southern Albania. The work begins with canonic developments of each motif independently and gradually expands into double canons, where both melodic motifs are superimposed and intertwined. The motifs themselves are rooted in ancient pentatonic scales enriched with hemitonic inflections, allowing for the creation of multiple canonic combinations among the voices. Through these interactions, the music evokes a wide spectrum of emotional states, ranging from dramatic and contemplative to joyful and celebratory.
Both motifs originate from the instrumental ceremonial repertoire of the traditional Përmet wedding. For this reason, they are performed without text, sung solely as musical notes. Përmet Canon in B (PCB) may be understood as a kind of perpetuum mobile—a musical process that never truly comes to an end, much like every person’s enduring love for their birthplace.
