Leonardo's mirror II : for flute, clarinet (B flat) and alto saxophone, 1985 / David Rowland
Toelichting:
Program note (English): Leonardo's Mirror II, for flute, clarinet and alto-saxophone was written in 1985 for Ferenc Hutyra, Walter Hekster and Andre Hemmers who gave the first performance at De IJsbreker in Amsterdam. The Leonardo in the title is Leonardo da Pisa, an Italian mathematician, born in the 13th century, who was the first person to express the classical proportions of the Golden Section in concrete numbers. I have used the series of numbers proposed by Leonardo da Pisa to control not only the structure of the music but also the internal relationships of pitch, rhythm, phrase lenghts, etc. The material of Leonardo's Mirror II is a re-working of the ideas first used in Leonardo's Mirror I, for solo clarinet and since composing those two works I have also written Leonardo's Mirror III which is an Octet for flute, clarinet, alto-saxophone, violin, viola, cello, piano and percussion. The increasingly larger instrumental size of these three works is also determined by Leonardo's mathematical
series. - DAVID ROWLAND
