Algos : for violin and orchestra, 1993 / Theo Abazis
Auteur(s):
Abazis, Theo
(Componist)
Toelichting:
Program note (English): I started working on this piece in 1992. At that time the war in former Yugoslavia was escalating, which meant a serious threat for the entire Balkan area. The neo-nationalist movement was rising throughout Europe and it seemed impossible to stop. In that period I was especially impressed by the ease with which masses of people were manipulated by individuals. Ideas were adopted or discarded without any intellectual analysis, approached independent of their context and, in the end, misused to serve the interests of third parties. 'Algos' was clearly influenced by these thoughts. The violin seems to be the sensible individual that manifests his ideas, which are consequently accepted or discarded by the orchestra. Whenever an idea is accepted, it is wrongly interpreted, adapted to unrealistic expectations, and thus it loses its original character and value, so that in the end all that remains is a superficial gesture. When an idea is unfit for manipulation, it is immediately
banished as treacherous. The violin is constantly confronted with misunderstandings and abuse of its ideas, suffering under its fatal role, without hope or tension. - THEO ABAZIS
