Program note (English): [Premiere: March 2002 - Boston, Akemi Fujita, piano and Ben Levy, double bass] - Tangoing-by was originally written around 1992 as a 'jazz' tune for the Trio Jorrit Dijkstra (with Steve Argüelles on drums and Mischa Kool on double bass). It's a classic AABA form plus a four bar intro, with a bar missing in the second last A section, to give a little twist. In 2001 pianist Sonsoles Alonso asked me if she could play the tune in her tango program with double bassist Sanne van Delft. I suggested making an arrangement for 'non-jazz players.' I deconstructed the piece, and wrote a quite energetic double bass feature, with the tune at the end. Double bass players in tango groups have a quite developed and almost violent bowing technique, which is expected from the bassist in this piece as well. The piano part should be played with the same intensity, and all accents must be played as energetic as possible. - JORRIT DIJKSTRA
