Lucifer's sun : for bass clarinet and harpsichord, 2001 / Vanessa Lann
Auteur(s):
Lann, Vanessa
(Componist)
Toelichting:
Program note (English): In ancient times 'Lucifer' was the name of both the morning star, as well as 'a pure spark of light' in the heavens. In Christian lore, the name refers to Lucifer, the fallen archangel, who was banished from Heaven after leading a revolt against the other angels. Lucifer, the 'other son of God', was destroyed by his own pride and became the antithesis of the Good embodied by Christ. Is the figure, then, all negative, all positive, or a combination of both? One symbolic figure can have many angles within itself, hence the unisono parts of bass clarinet and harpsichord in this piece. Fragmented patterns that repeat themselves in different guises allow the different sides of the 'sun' in Lucifer, as well as his role as the other 'son', to be explored. The microphone lets us investigate what layers of deception or humour exist under a seemingly safe exterior. The blend in sound of the two instruments also creates a new 'instrument' with both a softness and a sharp edge. - VANESSA
