Time present / past : for eight instruments / Roderik de Man
Auteur(s):
Man, Roderik de
(Componist)
Toelichting:
Two quotes taken from T.S. Eliot's poem Burnt Norton were the inspiration source:
Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
and time future contained in the past.
Time present and time future
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
The philosophical idea expressed in the poem, is in this case seen as a reference to compositional techniques which were used during the Classical period such as: a preference for clear structures, motives, forms of repetition and variation. They are clearly present in this composition. These elements from the past are combined with elements which belong to the present, and they are reflected in the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal aspects of the musical language used in 'Time present / past'. - RODERIK DE MAN
