Toelichting:
Riff is built on a chromatic theme in parallel fifths (‘power chords’) with a direct-ness and rawness of a heavy-metal riff. Similar to a theme-and-variations form, this theme goes through several metamorphoses. Towards the climactic end it returns in its original guise, as a recapitulation with additional dissonant stabs in a cubistic rhythm.
