Toelichting:
Program note (English): The word Arcanum is a term of alchemists, here used in the sense of 'secret medicine'. The title is meant as a symbol: secret, the work was composed in 1944 during the German rule in the Netherlands; medicine, inspiration against terror. In the broadest sense: music as an expression of the spirit versus degeneration and destruction. The four movements: Preludio, Toccata, Ciaccona and Finale are to be considered as a whole. - RUDOLF ESCHER
