Very little is known about Paolo Caccia, the dedicatee of this Scelta di Motetti, 1647 (Selection of Motets), that is collected by Giovanni Poggioli. Mr Caccia was the patron of Mr Poggioli, and Lord of Poggio Sommavilla. The book was printed in 1647 in Rome at Grignani’s. Of the composers that contributed to this album were the maestri di cappella or organist of several major churches in Rome.
The best-known composer in this album Virgilio Mazzocchi was a younger brother of Domenico Mazzocchi, a famous composer and lawyer. He was born near Civita Castellana, Lazio in 1597. He began his career as a church musician in the cathedral there. With his brother’s help he relocated to Rome, became Maestro di Cappella at the Chiesa del Gesù, and after that at San Giovanni in Laterano (for only three months) and by 1629 he was leading the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter’s Cathedral, succeeding Paolo Agostini who died of the plague. In addition to working in the court of Cardinal Barberini, Mazzocchi composed operas (e.g. San Bonifatio, with a libretto by Giulio Rospigliosi) and sacred works like the Vespro della Beata Vergine. He died in Civita Castellana, where he had gone with his singers to celebrate the holy patrons, after a sudden illness, in 1646.
