Toelichting:
Program note (English): The history of how 'Fluitkwintet II' came into being illustrates the form it generated. In 1977 I wrote a recorder quartet ('Blokfluitkwartet') which I later transcribed for four flutes. This flute quartet ('Fluitkwartet') is a subdued piece with long rests. The very fact that this was an "open" composition made that I could add a virtuoso solo flute part. The entire composition can now be performed in three ways: the first flute part as 'Solo voor fluit II' , flute parts 2-5 as 'Fluitkwartet' and the whole as 'Fluitkwintet II'.
The relation between the first part and parts 2-5 is in the first place a contrasting one, which does not mean that the two units are simply operating independently of each other. It is precisely the degree of cooperation which was incorporated in the piece as a feature of its own.

Sometimes the two groups seem to run exceedingly independently; at other moments they are explicitly much more related.

Notably at the end, where a chorale-like music is played by the quartet, the solo flute seems to have adapted itself completely.

Because the 'Fluitkwintet II' is a combination of two compositions which can also be performed separately, its texture has become very dense and complex.

Generally speaking, it is an atonal composition, but repeatedly modal elements also emerge, especially in the flute. These result from the many tone repetitions and the use of notes working as centres in the various sections of the work. - WIM DE RUITER
