Music : for organ, (1972) / Wim de Ruiter

Toelichting:
Program note (English): 'Music' for organ was written for the 1972 International Organ Composers' Contest in Zwolle, and was awarded the first prize.
It is an atonal composition based on a 7-note series. A large number of permutations of this series is used. Later on, the remaining notes, too, appear, but only in a vertical connection.
It is a one-movement work, but consists of several phases. Beginning and end are energetic, the middle section, a trio which should be played expressively, has a more subdued character.
Now and then, a more avant-garde way of playing the organ -e.g. half-open registers- appears along with the classical use of the organ.
Depending on the nature of the music the rhythmic notation is metrical or proportional.
As compared with many other modern organ pieces, this work is not extremely difficult. A mechanical organ with two keyboards and a free pedal is required at least to perform this work. - WIM DE RUITER
