Program note (English): The title has a dual connotation referring both to "brake" as such, as well as the jazz term "break". The first refers to the fact that the entire piece is a non-stop 'rallentando' from the very onset when the pianist "goes off" into a series of octaves that go persistently askew. In effect the piece evokes the type of situation in which a pianist who goes wrong would instinctively try to redress the balance by slowing down (rallentando). The second part consists of one protracted line in unison which toward the beginning assumes the character of a jazz break: the moment when the accompaniment stops for a couple of beats while the soloist continues. This section is strongly inspired by the work, particularly the solo recordings, of jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. - GUUS JANSSEN
