Toelichting:
Program note (English): I composed my second Symphony between August 1985 and Febuary 1986 partly on musical models originating from the winter of 1983/84. After 15 years of dealing with the subject, my fascination about the development and possibilities of the modern electronic keyboard - synthesizer made me decide to this risking enterprise. A risk, yes, as todays musical literature shows no comparable examples, so writing music for electronic and acoustic instruments demands a high degree of imagination. Nowadays synthesizers contain a enormous variety of sound, pitch, and new expression-capacities. The only shortcoming is their literal synthetic sound-source as well as the fact that the acoustic transformation needs the artificial use of loudspeakers. Electronic keyboards demand a complete new approach in technique and touche. I am convinced that within the development of contemporary orchestral - and chamber - music synthesizers will play an important role, far more than the age of electronic
experiment during the 50's and 60's did. Time will tell ... JACOB TER VELDHUIS
