Willem Jeths was born on August 31, 1959 in Amersfoort, The Netherlands.

Education: Jeths started his musical career as a child with piano and music theory lessons in the Music School of Amersfoort with Paul Seelig. He originally studied music education at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, from 1980 to 1982. He continued with composition at the Conservatory of Utrecht with Hans Kox and Tristan Keuris. He finished his studies with Keuris in 1988.
In addition to composition, Willem also studied musicology at the University of Amsterdam (1983-1991). He completed his studies with a doctoral dissertation about Elisabeth Kuyper (1877–1953), a composer and conductor, which was later published in the book, “Zes Vrouwelijke Componisten.”

Compositions: “What can I say about my music? For me, intuition and associations are the keywords while composing, together with striving towards a clarity and economy of musical material. Jeths has composed chamber and orchestral music (including solo concertos), songs and an opera, initially in an atonal idiom, but later flirting with tonality. He draws on the past and attempts to enrich it through experimentation. “My music is about extremes: strict purity versus distortion, loud against soft.” While his music is rich in tone colour, Jeths is frugal with his musical material. He meticulously works out timbral effects, often calling for playing techniques unused in the West – or anywhere – and creatively incorporating uncommon sound sources: toy instruments, breaking glass, dripping water.
He has been commissioned to write "Flugelhorn Concerto" (2002) and "Scale -le tombeau de Mahler"(2010) for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, "Intus trepidare" for Kronos Quartet, 6 works for the “Zaterdag Matinee” concert series, 3 works for the Rotterdam Philharmonic, 2nd piano concerto "Fas/Nefas" for the Osaka Symphoniker (Japan), cello concerto "Falsa/Ficta" for the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, "Harp Concerto" for the Residentie Orkest, "Seanchai" for Het Gelders Orkest, clarinet concerto "Yellow Darkness" for Het Brabants Orkest, "Quale Coniugium!" and "Suite Hôtel de Pékin" for Philharmonie Zuid-Nederland etc.
His most recent works include “Mors aeterna" for symphony orchestra (2015), “Recorder Concerto" for recorder solo and symphony orchestra (2014), "Conductus"(2014) to commemorate the bombardment of Rotterdam 75 years ago.
Future works include “Requiem” (World Premiere 2017) for mixed choir, 2 vocal soloists and symphony orchestra, song cycle “Laudi d’Amore” (WP 2016) for baritone and violin, "Suite Hôtel de Pékin" (WP 2016) for symphony orchestra, as well as a work for the 100th anniversary of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (WP 2018) and an opera for the "Opera Forward Festival" of the Dutch National Opera (WP 2018). 
Other professional experience: Jeths has been a composition teacher at the Conservatory of Amsterdam since 2007. He was also a composition teacher at the Fontys Conservatory in Tilburg from 2002 to 2007.
In the 2004–2005 season, Jeths was composer-in-residence with Het Gelders Orkest and the Brabant Orchestra, in 2005-2006 with De Doelen in Rotterdam and during the 2006–2007 season with the Orkest van het Oosten. In the year 2000 there was a three-day Willem Jeths Festival in Rotterdam. 
Awards: Jeths won the Composition Prize from the Conservatory of Utrecht in 1988. His composition, “Novelette for violin and piano” (1986) was selected for the ISCM World Music Days in 1990 in Oslo. During the Carl-Maria-von-Weber-Wettbewerb für Streichquartettkompositionen in Dresden in 1991, Jeths received a distinction award for his string quartet, “Arcate” (1990). The following year, he received another distinction for the same work as a string orchestra version.
 In 1996, Jeths received second and third prize in the Internationaler Wiener Kompositionswettbewerb for his violin concerto,“Glenz” (1993) and his "Piano Concerto" (1994).
In 2008, Jeths’ work “Meme” was selected for the Toonzetters Prize. In November 2014 he was appointed by copyright organization BUMA/STEMRA as the first “Componist des Vaderlands” of The Netherlands (Composer Laureate of the Netherlands). Also in 2014, Jeths won the prestigious "Amsterdam Prijs voor de Kunst" (Amsterdam Prize for the Arts) for his entire oeuvre, awarded by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK).

Willem Jeths (1959, Amersfoort) studeert aanvankelijk schoolmuziek aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. Teleurgesteld stapt hij over naar het Utrechts Conservatorium waar hij compositie studeert bij respectievelijk Hans Kox en Tristan Keuris.

Jeths studeert naast zijn compositiestudie muziekwetenschap aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Jeths componeert 'Procurans Odium', een orkeststuk waarin het orkest is opgedeeld in vijf groepen van 12 strijkers. Doordat elk orkestlid een eigen partij speelt, en door het gebruik van ver doorgevoerde canontechnieken, ontstaan klankwolken. In dit werk doet Jeths wat later een constante in zijn componeerwijze zal blijken: een beperkte hoeveelheid materiaal verscheidene gedaanten geven.

Jeths componeert 'Novelette' voor viool en piano, een werk waarmee hij zich losmaakt van de invloed van zijn leraar Tristan Keuris (maar hij oogst wel diens lof voor dit stuk). In 1988 voltooit hij zijn opleiding aan het Utrechts Conservatorium met de Prijs voor Compositie.

'Novelette' (1986) is een van de geselecteerde werken voor de Wereld Muziekdagen van de ISCM in Oslo. Jeths sluit zijn studie muziekwetenschap af met een scriptie over de 19e-eeuwse componiste Elisabeth Kuyper. De tekst is gepubliceerd in het boek 'Zes vrouwelijke componisten' (Zutphen: Walburg Pers, 1991).

Jeths componeert 'Glenz', een onconventioneel vioolconcert: de interactie tussen solist en orkest wordt verrijkt door een apart ensemble van negen strijkers dat het betoog van de soloviool steeds in een ander klankperspectief zet.

Jeths' carrière krijgt een enorme impuls wanneer hij tijdens het internationale Wiener Kompositionswettbewerb onderscheiden wordt met zowel de 2de prijs (voor het vioolconcert 'Glenz') als met de 3de prijs (voor zijn 'Pianoconcerto' uit 1994). De jury bestaat uit niemand minder dan Friedrich Cerha, Franco Donatoni, Gérard Grisey, Wolfgang Rihm en Lothar Knessl.

Theater Lantaren/Venster in Rotterdam organiseert in mei een driedaags 'Willem Jeths Festival'. Verschillende solisten en het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest spelen twaalf werken, waaronder de première van zijn celloconcert Fas-Nefas. Frances-Marie Uitti is hierbij de soliste. In hetzelfde jaar krijgt Jeths een compositie-opdracht van het Amerikaanse Kronos Quartet.

Tijdens het Holland Festival gaat het 'Bandoneon Concerto' in première, opgedragen aan en gespeeld door Per Arne Glorvigen die wordt begeleid door het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest onder leiding van Micha Hamel.

Het Flügelhorn Concerto, geschreven in opdracht van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest gaat in september in première met Peter Masseurs als solist.

Het Kronos Kwartet brengt het - in hun opdracht geschreven - (derde) strijkkwartet 'Intus Trepidare' in première. Dit seizoen is Willem Jeths composer-in-residence bij het Gelders Orkest in Arnhem waar hij in opdracht het orkestwerk 'Seanchai' schrijft. Daarna is hij composer-in-residence bij het Brabants Orkest waarbij het klarinetconcert 'Yellow darkness' ontstaat. Vervolgens is hij 'composer in residence' in De Doelen in Rotterdam. Ter gelegenheid van de heropening van de gerestaureerde Filharmonie in Haarlem componeert Jeths 'Ombre Cinesi' voor symfonieorkest. Het werk is een voorstudie van zijn opera-in-wording 'Hôtel de Pékin'.

Jeths wordt hoofddocent compositie aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Het Schönberg Ensemble geeft hem de opdracht voor een compositie voor twee altviolen en orkest. 'Meme' is gebaseerd is op een gegeven van de toekomstige opera 'Hôtel de Pékin'. Dit seizoen is Jeths composer-in-residence bij het Orkest van het Oosten.

De opera 'Hôtel de Pékin' (dreams for a dragon queen), op een libretto van Friso Haverkamp, gaat op 21 november in première bij de Nationale Reisopera, ter gelegenheid van de opening van het Muziekkwartier in Enschede. De opera verhaalt het leven van de (in China nog altijd omstreden) laatste keizerin van het Grote Rijk Cixi. Het beeld dat Jeths en Haverkamp van haar schetsen staat haaks op de actuele, gecensureerde geschiedschrijving in China, wat een eventuele uitvoering in Sjanghai voorlopig niet waarschijnlijk maakt. Het altvioolconcert 'Meme' wordt voor 'Toonzetters' geselecteerd als een van de beste stukken uit het seizoen 2007.

In de ZaterdagMatinee van 22 mei gaat het 'Violin Concerto no. 2' in première met Tasmin Little en het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest onder leiding van Reinbert de Leeuw. In september is Willem Jeths jurylid tijdens de Gaudeamus Muziekweek. Van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest heeft hij de opdracht gekregen voor het schrijven van een stuk in het kader van de Mahler-concerten. Op 9 december vindt de première plaats van 'Scale' onder leiding van Ed Spanjaard.

Op vrijdag 1 april vindt de première plaats van 'Monument to a Universal Mariiage'. Het stuk is geschreven in opdracht van de gemeente Best ter viering van 10 jaar burgerlijk huwelijk tussen partners van gelijke sekse. In november wordt 'Scale (Le tombeau de Mahler)' uitgevoerd in Bejing door het NCPA Concert Hall Orchestra onder leiding van Jun Maerkl.

Ter gelegenheid van de concertante uitvoering van de opera 'Hôtel du Pékin (Dreams for a Dragon Queen)' op 28 januari in de ZaterdagMatinee in het Concertgebouw van Amsterdam, wordt de nieuwe cd van Willem Jeths gepresenteerd.
