(Componist)
Toelichting:
According to Greek mythology, Penelope waited 20 years for the final return of her husband Odysseus. To delay her many suitors, she pretended to be weaving a burial shroud for Odysseus's elderly father Laertes and claimed that she would choose a suitor when she would be finished. However, every night, she would undo part of the shroud.
The composition depicts Penelope's lonely, sometimes desperate, talking-to-herself and her longing for Odysseus, as well as her working on the weaving loom (from bar 33) and pulling out the result afterwards.
