Toelichting:
Cinq études was written in Bilthoven in April 1951. The studies are an homage to Béla Bartók who didactics and use of East European folk music come through in the music. The Etudes were composed and premiered when De Leeuw resided in Villa Gaudeamus in Bilthoven. In 1953 he was awarded second prize at the International Music Academy in Genoa for his Cinq études.
