Vier ritmische etudes (Four rhythmical studies) was written in Utrecht in the autumn of 1952 when De Leeuw was studying ethnomusicology with Jaap Kunst. The four studies appear to be inspired by numerous didactic works by Béla Bartók. They already contain the germ cells that later crystallised into expanded modality (cyclical techniques and modal material).
