Program note (Dutch): (Première: 11-12-1992 - Vredenburg, Utrecht - Ian Partridge, tenor met het Radio Kamerorkest o.l.v. David Porcelijn). De teksten van de liederencyclus Chamber Music zijn ontleend aan de gelijknamige gedichtenbundel die James Joyce in 1907 publiceerde. Joyce, die in Parijs een opleiding kreeg voor concertzanger, vervaardigde zijn eigen teksten.
De flaptekst van de uitgave van Jonathan Cape vermeldt hieromtrent onder meer: 'Elusive and formal, these poems are, above all, musical. Joyce, who trained as a singer in Paris, set out to write lyrics that culd be sung, and their imagery - characteristically - appeals chiefly to the ear. Echoes from books, together with images from musical instruments, contribute to Joyce's "elegant and antique phrase". His models are the Elizabethean lyricists, the airs of Dowland and the words of Shakespeare.'
